Millions of people the world over will be inspired by your victory last night. After the deep divisive years of the Bush Administration the thought of change coming to America is not a day too soon. I know you are busy and won’t have time to read this, but I thought I would write anyway…
You, more than most, will not underestimate the sheer scale of the problems stacking up against you when you assume office in January. Last Thursday, as Congress debated our energy future inside the hallowed halls of Capitol Hill, activists from Oil Change USA gathered outside to stage a visual representation of relationship between government and Big Oil: In bed, together. And very naughty.
Recently, a scandal broke over illicit activities in the division of the Department of the Interior responsible for, among other things, royalties to oil companies. Executives were exchanging sexual favors, drugs and lavish gifts in what officials say was “a culture of substance abuse and promiscuity.” Turns out that our government is, literally, in bed with Big Oil. You can’t make this stuff up. Just as Congress looks poised to lift the offshore drilling ban for the first time in a generation, and with the echoes of Republican chants of “Drill, baby drill” still ringing in our ears, the Interior Department’s own Inspector General has released a report damning the Minerals Management Service (MMS) for frequent “sexual relationships with oil and gas industry representatives”, as well as marijuana and cocaine use.

Once again the Republicans are fielding a national ticket with deep connections to the oil industry. Sarah Palin, Governor of the oiliest state in the nation, is a vocal proponent of drilling in the Arctic Refuge, supports more drilling offshore, opposes the listing of the polar bear as an endangered species, and perhaps most disturbingly, is still a denier of global warming.
